The Icelandic Delegation Visits Faroe Islands to Learn from Förka

Date

A delegation of representatives from the Icelandic organizations participating in Terraforming Life recently traveled to the Faroe Islands to explore Förka bioplant, an innovative project transforming organic waste into biofuel and fertilizer. The visit was a vital step in fostering collaboration and gaining insight into this groundbreaking initiative in Iceland, which aims to tackle waste management challenges while promoting sustainable energy and agriculture.

Who Participated?

The delegation included representatives from:

  • The Icelandic Farmers’ Association: Advocating for agricultural advancements in Iceland.
  • First Water: Land-based fish farming company, interested in solutions for managing fish farming by-products.
  • Orkídea: A joint venture promoting innovation and investment in South Iceland’s food production and biotechnology sectors.
  • Ölfus Cluster: Overseeing planning and permits for infrastructure projects in the Ölfus region.
  • SMJ: Providing technical expertise and hosting the visit.

A Close Look at Terraforming Life

The Terraforming Life project is garnering attention for its innovative approach to waste management. By processing animal manure and fish sludge the objective is to create biofuel for energy use and nutrient-rich fertilizer for agriculture.

The Icelandic delegation toured the Förka site, engaging directly with engineers and project managers to learn about the technology and systems in place. Discussions focused on the environmental and economic benefits of the project, as well as potential challenges when adapting similar solutions for Icelandic conditions.

As part of the tour, the Icelandic delegation visited Sigert Paturson, a cow farmer, chairman of Bóndafelag Føroya (the Farmers’ Association in the Faroe Islands), and an active participant in the Förka project.

During the visit, Paturson shared his experiences of integrating the Förka project into daily farming operations. The initiative, which is closely aligned with the goals of Terraforming Life, focuses on converting organic farm waste into renewable energy and agricultural fertilizer.

The Icelandic delegation explored the processes Paturson employs, including the collection and processing of cow manure and its eventual transformation into biofuel and fertilizers. Discussions also touched on the challenges he faced when first adopting the system, from navigating infrastructure upgrades to ensuring community buy-in.

Partner Meeting: Building the Future Together

The visit culminated in a strategic partner meeting, bringing together stakeholders to discuss how Terraforming Life can implement similar technologies. Topics included adapting the system to suit Iceland’s climate, regulatory frameworks, and the logistics of scaling such initiatives.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

The Terraforming Life project represents a pioneering effort that holds promise where sustainable solutions are critical. The delegation expressed optimism about future collaborations and emphasized the importance of learning from successful initiatives like this.

With shared challenges and a unified vision, this partnership between Icelandic and Faroese stakeholders has the potential to redefine waste management and sustainable development.
