Biogas and Fertiliser Plant to Undergo Environmental Impact Assessment

Date

A decision has now been issued by the Housing, Construction and Planning Authority that the proposed biogas and fertiliser plant in Þorlákshöfn shall undergo a full environmental impact assessment. The facility is planned to be located within an industrial area in Þorlákshöfn.

The decision highlights the need for further analysis of specific aspects before a final position can be taken. This includes, among other things, impacts on air quality and odour, which are common considerations when processing organic material. Experience from neighbouring countries, such as the Faroe Islands, with operating similar biogas facilities near residential areas shows that odour and air emissions can be effectively managed using relatively straightforward technical solutions.

Preparations for the environmental assessment are already underway, and the project will continue to be developed in a structured and proactive manner in line with the requirements and feedback that have been identified.
