Visit to Orkugerðin to collect bone meal

Date

Last week, we visited Orkugerðin, which produces bone meal from slaughterhouse waste. The meal is exported to Norway to Yara but is also used locally as fertilizer by nearby farmers. We’re interested in exploring whether Terraforming LIFE and Orkugerðin could collaborate, so we collected samples of the meal and sent them for chemical analysis.

Ólafur Wernersson, the managing director of Orkugerðin, welcomed us and guided us through the production process—which was very interesting. Orkugerðin began operations in the year 2000 and holds a license to receive up to 14,000 tons per year
