Strong Momentum in the project

Date

The past few weeks have been busy and exciting for Terraforming LIFE. The project continues to move in the right direction, and several important milestones have been reached. Here’s a summary of recent developments:

Task force on the Value of Fish Sludge

A task force has been established to explore and develop opportunities related to the utilization of side streams from land-based aquaculture. The group focuses on factors such as salinity, chemical composition, fertilizer form, potential uses, and regulatory frameworks. This work will feed directly into Terraforming LIFE and support the project’s core objectives.

In addition to representatives from Terraforming LIFE, the group includes experts from Matís, the Agricultural Advisory Centre (RML), and Samherji. The group may expand in the coming weeks, and if you—or someone you know—has relevant expertise or interest in these topics, we encourage you to get in touch.

Facility Location Assessment

We are currently finalizing an analysis to determine the optimal location for the biogas and fertilizer production facility. This includes evaluating logistics routes, proximity to key side streams, and access to infrastructure such as electricity, water, and roads. The work is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Feasibility Study from NIRAS

Preliminary results are now in from the feasibility study conducted by Danish engineering firm NIRAS. The findings provide valuable insights into capital and operational costs, compatible waste streams, required equipment, and estimated biogas output based on available material volumes. This analysis forms an important foundation for upcoming decisions.

Aqua Nor

At the end of August, representatives of Terraforming LIFE will attend the Aqua Nor exhibition in Trondheim—one of the world’s largest aquaculture trade shows. The goal of our visit is to present the project, strengthen our network, and gain insights into developments in neighboring countries, particularly regarding salinity in fish sludge.

Representing the project at Aqua Nor will be:
Sigurður Trausti Karvelsson (First Water)
Hilmar Vilberg Gylfason (The Farmers’ Association of Iceland)
Gyða Pétursdóttir (The Farmers’ Association of Iceland)

Will you be there too? Don’t hesitate to get in touch—we’d love to connect.

Field Visit to Borgarfjörður

During a recent field visit to Borgarfjörður, we explored a range of equipment and storage solutions related to manure management and fertilizer use. At Syðstu-Fossar, farmer Unnsteinn Snorri Snorrason welcomed us and shared his expertise in fertilizer production. We also visited Hvanneyri and the Hestur research farm, operated by the Agricultural University of Iceland, where we learned about current research and experimentation. Lastly, we met with farmer Eiríkur Blöndal, who has been actively applying a variety of organic materials to his fields.

These visits are invaluable to the project’s development, providing real-world context and deepening our understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing farmers in this field.

Conference Recording Still Available

We’d like to remind everyone that the full recording of the recent Biogas and Fertilizer Production – Opportunities in Side Streams conference, held earlier this summer in Selfoss, is still available to watch. The program features a range of insightful presentations and updates on the project and related fields.

These past weeks have been full of progress, and we are excited about the strong momentum building within the project. We look forward to the months ahead and all that’s to come!
