First Water
First Water, founded in 2017 and based in Þorlákshöfn, farms Atlantic salmon in land-based, closed systems using a Hybrid Flow-Through System (HFS) that combines flow-through and recirculating technologies. The system uses naturally filtered seawater from underground lava-rock wells and Iceland’s renewable energy to maintain clean, stable conditions. Designed for efficiency and sustainability, the facility will reach around 60,000 tons of annual production when fully developed. As a partner in Terraforming LIFE, First Water provides aquaculture sludge to be converted into biofertilizer and biogas, supporting a circular and environmentally responsible food system.
